Sea Fishing

Freshwater Fishing

See Lakes in County Galway

Lough Corrib
The season for brown trout on Lough Corrib opens on February 15th and trout are usually caught on fly from the very first day of the season. However, the best wetfly fishing is at the beginning of April, for about two weeks, and again during the Mayfly period, May 16th to 30th. Dapping the natural mayfly is very popular in late May / early June. Dapping the grasshopper or daddy-long-legs in August / September is also popular. Wet fly-fishing during the same months usually gives good results. Trolling can take salmon and big ferox trout, the salmon from April onwards and the warmer summer months are often best for the large ferox trout. In certain areas of the Lough, fresh-run grilse are caught on fly from about the third week in May. Dry fly can take plenty of trout during the daytime, even if trout are not rising freely. Fished on the "blind," it can bring up excellent trout. Mayfly dry tyings are important, including a few tyings of the Gray Wulff and Yellow Wulff.

Lough Mask
Fishing the wet fly is good on Lough Mask in April and during the Mayfly period, which is usually from May 20th, or a little later sometimes, to the first week in June. Wet fly can also be very productive onwards from the end of July. There are many areas of the lough where dry fly fishing can take big trout from May onwards. The lough is famous for dapping the different natural insects. Trolling for large ferox trout up to 18lb gives good results.

The Clare Rivers produces trout to mainly dry fly on summer evenings and sometimes during daytime. The Clare flows through Tuam and into Lough Corrib, on the eastern side near Headford. A permit from the local angling Club is requires for the Clare River. There are stretches of the Clare River, near Tuam and Corofin, where spinning and worming is allowed for salmon at certain times only, otherwise its fly-fishing.

Suck Valley Way
The River Suck links a 60 mile stretch of countryside in West Roscommon and East Galway known as The Suck River Valley. Walkers can enjoy this unspoiled countryside by walking The Suck Valley Way.
The 100km Walk Way is unusual among Irish Waymarked Ways because for most of it's length it lies across lowland farms. It also crosses the boglands and callows of the river Suck with their numerous lakes and drainage channels. The way passes through the "Nine Friendly Villages", Ballygar, Creggs, Glinsk, Ballymoe, Ballintubber, Dunamon, Castlecoote, Athleague and Castlecoote.

Western Way
This route starts at Oughterard and follows the shore of Lough Corrib to Maam. From Maam it finds a low level way through the great quartzite ranges of the Maum Turks and Twelve Bens, before descending to the deep, narrow valley of Killary Harbour and junction with the Western Way (Mayo) near Leenane.
Route Details: Oughertard, Maam, Maumeen, Inagh, Toorenacoona, Leenane. - Total Distance: 50km / 31 miles.

Cloonfad Scenic Walks - near Dunmore
Cloonfad Scenic Walks provide a range of walking routes near the villages of Cloonfad and Dunmore. They consist of seven circular walks in a unique and stress free landscape. The Cloonfad area of west Roscommon epitomises much of rural Irish life. With a landscape that is at once rugged and tranquil and a network of time-honoured walking routes, this is about as far as you can get from the pressures of modern living.

Connemara National Park
Connemara National Park encompasses some 2,957 hectares of rugged quartzite and schist terrain of north Connemara, stretching from sea level at Letterfrack to some of the peaks of the Twelve Bens mountains (Benbaun, Bencullagh, Benbrack and Muckanacht). The park features two self guiding nature trails. The visitor centre features an information desk, tea room, shop, audio-video show and an exhibition on the Connemara landscape. Regular guided nature - check times.

Facilities here include walled gardens enclosing a herd of Sika deer, an old forge - now a museum containing local artifacts - a tug boat (around 900 years old), the Herd's House and a flour mill (now in ruins).
